Adaylin Alvarez, a 2017 graduate of Southwest High School in Pharr San Juan Alamo ISD, will use her $5,000 scholarship to study at The University of Texas at Austin. Her interests include health care and immigration issues, and she wants to attend medical school or law school one day.

"As a Hispanic and Mexican American, I have to defy the expectations of society and myself," Alvarez wrote in her scholarship application, explaining she's learned her ethnicity and culture are a "definition and extension of who I am, not a limit."

Graduating second her class, Alvarez said, "I have shown people that I will break the odds and I will achieve my dreams."

In nominating Alvarez for a TCTA scholarship, theater arts teacher Carlos Palacios said, "Adaylin is an example of a student I come to work for. She is never one to boast and always one to uplift others in their accomplishments. Addy has shared with me numerous times that she wishes to become a pediatrician and move back home to serve her impoverished community."
