The University of Texas at El Paso

2013 Canutillo ISD graduate Omar Martinez is using his $1,500 scholarship to attend The University of Texas at El Paso, where he studies criminal justice. He plans to become an attorney. His TCTA scholarship was renewed for 2014-15.

“I don’t want to become an attorney so I can collect a great paycheck,” he wrote. “I want to be a game changer, an innovator, someone who can change the dynamics of a profession and ultimately succeed.”

Martinez was nominated by Northwest Early College High School English teacher Heidi McConnell. "He is a superb debater and gifted writer, so this career plays to his strengths," she wrote in her nomination. "In my 29 years of teaching high school and college, I have never met a student as determined and passionate about his future career as Omar. He is 100 percent dedicated to achieving his dream of becoming a lawyer and he knows exactly how he will accomplish this goal."
